Restoration and future at the Toussainthuis

The first cadastral records of this remarkable building date back to 1814, revealing that the history of this house spans nearly two centuries. The property has served many purposes over time—as an artist’s studio, The Hague’s public library, a dance school, and a theatre. During its period as a theatre, starting in 1994, maintenance was neglected, and real decay set in from 2010 onward, when investors took over the building with plans to partially demolish the house and studio. As a result, the building stood vacant for about five years, with missing windows allowing wind and water to enter freely. By the end of that period, almost nothing remained intact, and the property was in a deplorable state.

A restoration full of challenges

The restoration of Toussainthuis proved to be a complex endeavor. From structural, legal, and financial perspectives, the restoration work had to be carried out in phases. Every architectural adjustment was thoroughly reviewed and carefully considered before restoration could begin. In some cases, obtaining the necessary legal consent from neighbors and the municipality took longer than the restoration itself.
